Printing From Tray 1

When printing from Tray 1, be sure to follow the media specifications below:

Loading Paper In Tray 1


caution    Caution: If you change the type of paper in a tray, you must change the paper type and size on the front panel to match the paper that you loaded. If you fail to do this, print-quality problems can occur and the fuser can be damaged.

  1. Pull the tray completely out of the printer.
  2. remove tray

  3. If loading paper having a different width or length, adjust the width and length guides.

  5. Extend the tray to accommodate legal or US Folio (legal 13) paper by moving the release tabs to the sides of the tray and pulling out on the front of the tray. Contract the tray by moving the release tabs to the sides of the tray and pushing in the front of the tray.

  7. Load the paper, transparencies, or other specialty media in the tray. Do not load above the indicated fill line.

    note    Note: Do not load paper, transparencies, or specialty media above the indicated fill lines inside the tray. Only use flat paper, transparencies, or specialty media. If frequent jamming occurs with card stock or heavier paper that is less than 175 mm (7 in.) long, reduce the number of sheets in the tray.

  9. Slide the side guide firmly against the paper or other specialty media.

  11. Insert the tray into the printer slot, and push it completely to the back of the printer.

  13. Confirm or change the paper size and type when prompted by the front panel.

Configure the Printer Driver to Print From Tray 1

Select the appropriate Operating System, then follow the instructions provided.

Windows 2000, XP, or Windows Server 2003
Windows 98 or Windows Millennium (ME)
Windows NT
Mac OS 9
Mac OS X (10.1 and later

Operating System Steps
Windows 2000, XP, or Windows Server 2003
  1. Select File, then select Print.
  2. Click the Properties button.
  3. Select the Paper/Quality tab.
  4. Select the correct document size and paper type.
  5. Select Force Printer to print from specific tray, then choose Tray 1.

    Note: Although the option to print to a specific tray is available, in most cases it is recommended to select Let printer select which tray to print from. This will allow the printer to print from any tray that has the specified document size and paper type selected in step 4 above.

Windows 98 or Windows Millennium(ME)
  1. Select File, then select Print.
  2. Click the Properties button.
  3. Select the Setup tab.
  4. Select Force printer to print from specific tray, then choose Tray 1.

    Note: Although the option to print to a specific tray is available, in most cases it is recommended to select Let printer select which tray to print from and then select the correct document size and paper type. This will allow the printer to print from any tray that has the specifed document size and paper type.

Windows NT
  1. Select File, then select Print.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Select the Paper/Quality tab.
  4. Select the correct document size and paper type.
  5. Select Force printer to print from specific tray, then choose Tray 1.

    Note: Although the option to print to a specific tray is available, in most cases it is recommended to select Let printer select which tray to print from. This will allow the printer to print from any tray that has the specified document size and paper type selected in step 4 above.

Mac OS 9
  1. Select File, then select Print.
  2. From the All pages from drop-down menu, select Tray 1.
  3. Click on the General drop-down menu and select Advanced Options 1.
  4. Select the correct paper type loaded in Tray 1 from the Paper Types: drop-down menu.

    Note: Although the option to print to a specific tray is available, in most cases it is recommended to select Auto Select in step 2 above. This will allow the printer to print from any tray that has the specified document size and paper type selected in step 4 above.


Mac OS X (10.1 and later)
  1. Select File, then select Print.
  2. Click the Copies and Pages drop-down menu, then select Paper Feed.
  3. From the All pages from drop-down menu, select Tray 1.
  4. Click Printer Features from the Paper Feed drop-down menu.
  5. Select the correct paper type loaded in Tray 1 from the Paper Types: drop-down menu.

    Note: Although the option to print to a specific tray is available, in most cases it is recommended to select Auto Select in step 3 above. This will allow the printer to print from any tray that has the specified document size and paper type selected in step 5 above.
